ADVENTURE COLD WATER PRE-LAUNCH CHECKLIST
Know/review tides & weather.
Check that all paddlers are dressed properly - no cotton garments, waterproof top
layer, gloves, hat or neoprene hood & booties.
Ask each participant if they have any physical or mental issues that the leader should be
aware of, such as asthma, bee sting allergy, recent muscle/bone injuries, heart condition,
panic attcks, etc.
Determine whether paddlers have done a wet exit and re-entry in cold water.
Lifevests - properly adjusted & all buckles fastened?
Paddling jacket/pants/drysuit - all gaskets & zippers closed?
Hat or hood on? Neck protected with fleece or t-neck?
No loose straps on any clothing/pfd that could cause entrapment?
All paddles have paddle leashes?
One spare paddle for every 6-8 people? Spare paddles that are light are a good idea in
case of fatigue or soreness.
Boat hatches all secured?
Tow belts worn in 50% of kayaks?
VHF and cell phone for leaders? Drinking water?
Hot beverage, snack in deck bag?
Remind paddlers to stay within 3 boat lengths of the group at all times.
Partner sit-inside kayakers with a rescue buddy. (Sit-inside
kayaks must have bulkheads fore & aft and be equipped with
a spray skirt.)
