KAYAK ADVENTURE COLD WATER PRE-LAUNCH CHECKLIST

Know/review tides & weather.

Check that all paddlers are dressed properly - no cotton garments, waterproof top layer, gloves, hat or neoprene hood & booties.

Ask each participant if they have any physical or mental issues that the leader should be aware of, such as asthma, bee sting allergy, recent muscle/bone injuries, heart condition, panic attcks, etc.

Determine whether paddlers have done a wet exit and re-entry in cold water.

Lifevests - properly adjusted & all buckles fastened?

Paddling jacket/pants/drysuit - all gaskets & zippers closed?

Hat or hood on? Neck protected with fleece or t-neck?

No loose straps on any clothing/pfd that could cause entrapment?

All paddles have paddle leashes?

One spare paddle for every 6-8 people? Spare paddles that are light are a good idea in case of fatigue or soreness.

Boat hatches all secured?

Tow belts worn in 50% of kayaks?

VHF and cell phone for leaders? Drinking water?

Hot beverage, snack in deck bag?

Remind paddlers to stay within 3 boat lengths of the group at all times.

Partner sit-inside kayakers with a rescue buddy. (Sit-inside kayaks must have bulkheads fore & aft and be equipped with a spray skirt.)
